An Effective Witness

AN EFFECTIVE WITNESS

1 Peter 3:15: But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear. NIV says, gentleness and respect.

INTRO: Jesus would witness if He still walked the earth… He came to seek and to save the lost…
Witnessing begins by setting apart Christ as Lord in your heart…
Perhaps the greatest sin of Christians is also the reason so few witness effectively: Jesus does not have the undivided loyalty of our hearts…
In 2 Cor. 11:3, Paul said: “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so (as a result of) your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.”
Paul’s concern for the Corinthians remains a concern today… If we are not careful, we will let Satan rob us of the desire for witnessing and the joy of seeing someone accept Christ as Savior…

The beginning phrase of this verse tells us that placing Christ, as Lord of our life is essential, not optional

Let’s examine the scripture to see the ingredients for positive witnessing experiences.
I. YEARN TO REVEAL YOUR ANSWER.
“Be ready always...” Is there desire? Do you have a burden for the lost? Are you committed to sharing your faith in Christ? Does eagerness, enthusiasm and joy describe your heart?
A recent Gallup Poll reveals that perhaps the world has more of a yearning to know Jesus than Christians do to share Him… I pray that God puts His desire for the lost into your inner being…
II. LEARN THE REASONS FOR YOUR ANSWERS.
...to give an answer to every man...” The apostle Paul spoke of his being a servant, a Jew, weak, yea “all things to all men, that I might by all means save some” (1 Cor. 9:19-22)… We must follow in the steps of Paul…We must become all things to all people…We must treat all people with love knowing that Christ became like us so he could save some of us…
You must know the gospel and you must learn men in order to speak with clarity… The gospel message is clearly presented in 1 Cor. 15:1-4… All through the Bible we see men as they are… Study the Bible for your answers… “The heart of the righteous studieth to answer” (Proverbs 15:28).
III. EARN THE RIGHT TO SHARE YOUR ANSWER.
“...to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you.” Christians are called the salt of the earth… Salt creates thirst… Be salty and you will earn the right to share your faith in Jesus… People will ask you! When is the last time that happened? What would you say if someone did ask you about how to be saved? A living Christian example opens the door for the spoken word… Our answers are to be given in a gentle reverent way... That is how we win others to Christ…

THREE T'"S,TOUBLES, TRIALS, AND TESTING

THREE T’s: TROUBLES, TRIALS and TESTING.

James 1:2-4, KJV. – 2) My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3) knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience…4) But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting for nothing.

James 1:12 - Blessed is the man that endureth temptation for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love Him…

TEMPTATIONS & TRIALS:
When trouble comes into our lives, we often tend to ask God, "Why me, Lord? What have I done to deserve this?" Be honest, have you ever said, “Why me Lord…?”

I know the answer…Listen, we all have troubles and often those troubles do come from disobedience, but many times they just come, period…They can come from the disobedience of someone else, they can come from the problems we face each day as we go out into the world…
Ever had a flat tire at a convenient time? Ever had some mail delivered to you that put you stomach in knots?
(PS. Just now, a horn blew in my yard, I went out to see who it was and it was the mail lady…She delivered trouble straight to me…Certified mail from U.S. Custom & Border Control…A lump came up in my throat but because of my faith in Jesus Christ the lump was transferred into a word of encouragement from my mouth to the mail lady, “God bless you, have a nice day…!” and away she went…I have faith that no matter what is inside the “Big Brown envelope,” all will turn out well…why, #1) because I trust God and #2) my wife knows how to handle these things.)
Troubles turn into trials and trials turn into test…
God is not always punishing us for something we've done… Some of the godliest people have endured troubles that would cause the average Christian to faint… Troubles have a purpose in the Christian's life: to try and test our faith, to make us more like Christ...
James said we should rejoice when we fall into various testings because the trial of our faith will produce endurance, and the ability to stand firm… We must be willing to endure testing until God's purpose is accomplished, that we may become mature and complete in our faith… But we are urged to ask God for wisdom in the midst of our trials, so we can receive the full benefit of them.
THE WAY TO CONQUER TROUBLE, TRIALS & TESTING:
"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him…" (James 1:5)
He will show us how to react with humility and faith and how to endure to the end.
God's discipline comes from His love for His people… He wants each of us to grow spiritually and become a blessing to others… His discipline (child-training) is for our own protection, that we may be guarded against a life of idleness and spiritual weakness… Trials come to instruct us in something new about God and something about ourselves as well…
"Man, I can't stand the stress!" we often cry out… Yet God reminds us that there is no temptation (or testing) that is not common to all mankind, and He assures us that He will give us the grace we need to endure it.
"And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear." (1 Corinthians 10:13)
Actually, "the strain of troubles builds our strength..." Just like working out or running, “No pain, no gain…” "If there is no strain, there is no new strength ... Immediately when you face the strain, you will get the strength."
God cannot give us an increase in our dependence (Dependant on Him) and joy unless we will accept the strain that He sometimes puts into our lives.
God says that the person who undergoes testing is specially blessed… He will not only receive a deeper relationship with God in this life, but he will also receive a special crown in eternity… When we spend ourselves for others and for God, we get more strength... More life and energy comes to us as we exercise our faith in God… Our life energy grows and expands even in this life as we endure trials.
When we feel crushed with difficulties, we are to rejoice in God… We must realize that our whole situation is foolishly impossible to anyone but God… God has put us into this position so we will learn to trust Him more & more… All that is needed is to ask in faith for wisdom and for strength to carry on day by day… God will take care of the rest… But we are to ask in faith, boldly believing that God will provide what we need… We are not to waver, but to be firm in our faith…
Our God is the God of hope. Our God is the strength we need in times of Troubles, Trials, and Testing…Have you been passing the test? If so, good, if not, then ask God for more wisdom so you can understand.
When we ask for wisdom, God will open our spirit to think about the choices we make…As I said earlier, all problem don’t come because of something we have done wrong, but there is no real way to get around the fact that, choices matter…If we make good choices, good things will usually happen…but beware, if you make bad choices, bad thing will usually happen…
The next time you have an important choice to make ask yourself this: “Am I doing what God wants me to do?” If you can answer that question with a great big “Yes,” then go ahead…but if you’re not sure if the choice you are about to make is right…slow down…Why…Because choices matter a lot…
Prayer: Heavenly Father, give us determination to bear the trials you have sent our way. We rely on you for wisdom to carry on, knowing that through these trials you will increase our strength. Father, help us to think about what we are thinking about so we can make the right choices in this life…We give you praise, in Jesus name… Amen.

A Faith Bigger than Fear!!

A Faith Bigger than Fear!!
John 14: 1-3, KJV

1) Let not you heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in Me! 2) In My Father’s house are many mansions: If it were not so, I would have told you…I go to prepare a place for you…3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Some people bear three kinds of trouble—the ones they’ve had, the ones they have, and the ones they expect to have…Read that over and let it sink in just a moment…But listen, these verses, from the gospel of John, they contain power that should an will strengthen your faith so it will have supremacy over all fear…

As I read these verses, spoken by Jesus Christ Himself, I hear a better strategy for us all…1) Accept the past, 2) live in the present, 3) and place the future in God’s capable hands…

1) If you are troubled, in a definite since, that is fear of some sort…In the first verse of this text, Jesus said, “Let not your hearts be troubled,” so if we listen and then by faith, put this exhortation from the very lips of Jesus Himself, into action, we can be delivered from troubled hearts or fear through trust in God & ChristTrust is faith & faith if trust!

2) In the second verse, Jesus tells us that there is already, in His Father’s house, many mansions…Then in common language He say’s, “Listen, I am being completely honest with you, they are there, and I am going to prepare one just for you.”
Now for me, this gives me hope, and it should do the same for you also…If you and I are truly Christians, then we should be delivered through the hope for God’s house or mansions…If non-believers are, in some way, exposed to this same message, it can give them hope also…Our help or hope comes only in the name of Jesus…

When you and I are preparing something, this usually means we are doing a certain work of some sort…That make sense, right?
When my wife prepares a mean for the family, she is doing some work…This work she is doing, in preparing this meal, is being a servant to her family and it requires from her heart a special love, for her family …How much more then, should we be delivered from the troubles of everyday life when we know that Christ is at work, preparing something special for His family, because of His love for that family…

3) Then in the third verse, Christ takes hope even deeper into the future…He tells us, “Surly, if I go to prepare this place for you, I am going to come back and pick you up and bring you unto Myself, so that you can be with Me there also…”

So, studying these verses should give us release from the past, strength for the present, and, never ending hope that our future in is God’s capable hands…

I don’t know about you, but it does my spirit good, to know that, one day I will be, delivered from this present state into the state of living with Christ eternally…

As you face the challenges of everyday life, you may be comforted by this fact…Trouble of every kind, is passing…And worries, of every kind are temporaryBut God’s love is everlasting…The troubles that concern you will pass…God remains…And with these thought in mind, it’s now time to place today’s challenges in their proper place…In God hands…In His hands, “Faith is bigger that Fear.”

God bless,

Faithfulness and Focus!!

Faithfulness and Focus!
Deuteronomy 4:29, KJV

But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find Him, if thou seek Him with all your soul.”

So often we say, we are Christians, and we are being directed by God and doing all we can to stay inline with His will…but are we really? When things start getting hectic and seeming out of control…do we still trust in Him to be the Head and not the tail…If we are truly directed by Him, then we will make decisions in our everyday activities that are inline with His will…

God really deserves your best…Is He getting it? Do you make an appointment with your Heavenly Father each day? Do you carve out moments when He receives your undivided attention? Or is your devotion to Him momentary, unfocused and irregular?

If I say I am a Christian then I need to act like it…I need to focus…When you acquire the habit of focusing your heart and mind squarely upon God’s intentions and commands for your life, He will guide your steps and bless your comings and goings…But if you allow distractions to take priority over your relationship with God, they will—and you will pay a price for your mistakes…

Today focus on God’s Word and upon His will for your life…When you do, you’ll be amazed at how quickly everything else comes into focus…

We have something seriously amazing in store for us if we will match our beliefs with obedience…We must pray that God will continue to strengthen our confidence in His power and trustworthiness, and that He will grant us courage to step out in faith and give us opportunities to prove ourselves as His children…

We must become doers of the Word

Listen, if from here today, you seek the LORD your God, you will find Him if you look for Him with all your heart and with all your soul and all your decisions

He is there just waiting for us to call on Him for the help He offers and promises in His Word.

Success isn’t the key…Faithfulness is!!

Be absolutely clear about who you are and what you stand for…Refuse to compromise!!

May God bless you always…

I've Got Plenty of Time!!

I’ve got plenty of time!!!!

I found out the out the other day, a old friend of mine had died…He died in a horrible automobile accident…He took with him that day, another man and the man’s little girl was damaged for the rest of her life…Although she is still alive, she is permanently damaged in several ways…Her body is always going to be deformed because of the physical trauma that she got from the accident…Next she will always remember that day and what happened…She saw the blood of her daddy and the blood and body parts of the driver, who was my friend, laying on the ground around the accident…She has emotional damage that she has to live with…I pray that she finds, peace and release from this accident…

Now, the reason I want to write this and put it out into the world is because of the words that the driver, my old friend, said to me a few days before he went to his death…

He had not long been out of prison and because of the death of his parents and the sale of their old home sight…He had somewhere around three hundred thousand dollars…He had bought a truck, a boat, a store an Harley motor cycle and much beer and drugs…He was living it up…

Some how I had ended up with his Bible…I had picked it up from a pile of trash at his parents house when I was helping him move some of his stuff…I had called him several times and tried to get up with him as to give him his Bible back…It was and still is an old King James Version…It is his family Bible…In it, was the name of his parents and several other family members…But each time I called him, trying to get him to come get this Holy Bible, his remark was, “I’ve got plenty of time…” I’ll get it later…” He said, he didn’t have time, he was to busy, he was going to a party…He had a date with some woman…”I’ve got plenty of time, nothing is going to happen to me.”

I tried to get him to church, to Sunday school, to church functions but he didn’t have time for that kind of stuff… He told me once that he didn’t like some of those old people at the church because of one reason or the other…He always had and excuse…I don’t know what his excuse was for the wreck that day, but there was enough beer cans in the back of his truck to fill up several trash cans, and he had some crack cocaine in his pocket…He had time for all that but never found the time to come get his Bible…I wonder if God had time to send some angel to the wreck site that afternoon to take his soul to heaven or if the Good Lord was to busy and sent some other hot source to take him away…That kind of stuff if not for us or me to know but I do know this if you are reading this, you have time to get your life in order, that is if you don’t already…If you think you are in good standing with salvation, then, now may be the time for you to get busy trying to help some other poor soul find Jesus…It could be one of your family members, or may its some old friend that you need to talk to…Who ever it is, if they are alive and breathing, then, they might have plenty of time…But the truth is we don’t have any time to waste…

“I’ve got plenty of time”! Really!!

The book of James in the Bible reminds us that our life is truly, very short…
James, who was the half brother of Jesus tells us, (“What is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” James 4:14)

You may think there’s plenty of time, but God says differently…To one who thought he had it made for years, Jesus Christ said, (“Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee.” Luke 12:20)

Later in that same chapter, He warns us all…and I mean all…”Be ye therefore ready also; for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.” Luke 12:40)

The day my friend and the other man died, they really had no idea what was ahead of them…One second they were having a good ole time and then, in the blink of an eye they were gone, somewhere!!

A good word of warning comes to all of us from the prophet Amos…”prepare to meet thy God.” Amos 4:12)

As I have studied and grown in my Christian walk, I have learned a great deal…One thing I have learned is that there is no way I can figure all this stuff out…I mean, life, pain, confusion, depression and hundreds more things like that…but one thing I do know, and it is the Lord Jesus as my Savior…The Bible speaks of only One way to be prepared to meet God, and that is to be SAVED! (“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12)

SAVED!!! FROM WHAT???Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him…Romans 5:9)

The wrath of God is God’s punishment for sin and includes both separation from God in this life and eternal damnation in the fires of Hell…

Now I run into people all the time that tell me, they don’t believe in hell, and my comment back to them is that you don’t have to believe in hell to go there…If you know anything of the words of Jesus you know that he talked about hell more than he talked about heaven…and if you believe His words, He simple terms, He says wide is the road that leads to destruction and many be there that go down that road, but narrow is the road that leads to eternal life with Him and few find it…that may not be exactly how He said it, but it is close enough… to me this means that more are going to hell than heaven…All I know is that the Bible tells me we must be saved!!!

SAVED BY WHOM!!!
For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved…” John 3:17

The Lord Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, who died for our sins and rose, again, is the only one who can save from sin…

SAVED HOW!!!
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and this not of yourselves; it is the gift of God…” Ephesians 2:8)

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved…” Romans 10:3

Man seeks to reach God through religion, good works, and sincerity, but God has already reached out to man through Christ…One is saved when he rejects his own efforts, turns from sin, and embraces Jesus Christ in Faith…

SAVED WHEN???

Behold now is the day of salvation…(2nd Corinthians 6:2)
Many people have been turned off by all the traditional church stuff, such as walking down the isle to receive salvation…the truth is that you don’t have to walk anywhere to be saved, all it takes is a heart that accepts the price Jesus paid for your sins…Accept the payment, turn from yours sins to Jesus, call on His name from the bottom of your heart for the salvation that He offers…He paid it all, we just have to call and He will answer…

A person is saved by confessing to God that he has sinned and receiving Jesus Christ into his heart as Lord and Savior.

Salvation by faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to miss the full and total wrath of God…Jesus said, I am the way the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father but by me…

You might say, “I’ve got plenty of time” but do you?

Friends Sharpen Friends

Proverbs 27:17, NIV. As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

KJV. Iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friends.

Define countenance: A look or attitude indicative of encouragement or of moral support. To encourage in the right direction.

NLT. As iron sharpens iron, a friend sharpens a friend.

Introduction:

Centuries before the birth of Christ, Solomon gathered the wisdom sayings that make up the book of Proverbs/ One of the wisdom sayings is, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”

The blacksmith in Solomon’s day was one of the most important individuals in town/ Not only did he spend hours between a hot fire and an anvil, he also was a potter, a weaver, and carpenter, and a fix-it man/ He knew how to make and repair household objects, and he knew how to sharpen farm tools and weapons as well/

Every village had a blacksmith like this/ People went to him every year to get their plows and axe heads sharpened/ They had seen the burly citizen with blackened hands often/ They knew the sounds that came from his workshop/ The repetitive pounding of his hammer against to anvil was a distinct sound/ Solomon’s audience immediately understood what was meant by the words, “Iron sharpens iron.”

They had also seen friends sharpen each other/ Friendships are forged out of many experiences/ Friendship is evidenced when storytelling turns to laughter/ Friendship is experienced when there are times of difficulty and hardships/ Friends don’t let their friends down/ The bonds of friendship grow stronger as friends face challenges together/ Friendships can last and entire lifetime/ God gives us the gift of being able to relate to others./ He expects us to use the gift to its fullest/ In Solomon’s day, and in ours, it is important to understand the challenge of the words, “Friends sharpen friends.”

Developing friendships is crucial in life:
Sometimes it is easier to remember the need to sharpen farm instruments than the need to sharpen our relationships with others/ The values have somehow switched/ Life gets busy/ Not so busy we can’t sharpen the hoe in time to weed the garden, just too busy to spend time with a friend/ This week it’s the hoe/ Next week, the shovel/ Soon we’re sharpening spearheads/ Before you know it, we’ll be sharpening the sword/ That’s what happens when we ignore the spiritual discipline of friendship & fellowship.

Solomon wanted his people to see the link/ Spiritual dullness has a tendency to keep us from seeing the obvious/ The image of iron sharpening iron reminds each of us that friendships really do matter.

Digging into the Hebrew words of this text is like digging into a gold mine/ The word that we translate “face” comes to us from the original language with the word “Paniym.”/ This common, everyday word has several shades of meaning, each of which could apply to the proverb before us/ The obvious meaning is a reference to the face/ Paniym is how a person looks/ Our facial expressions and characteristics let other’s know who we are as well as what we are thinking/ The writer is telling us that good friends help us look better/ If we want to have better looks, we need to choose better friends.

Friends lift the faces of friends/ We enjoy being with our friends because we share life together/ We laugh together, enjoying, “Inside jokes” and recalling stories from our past/ Friends lift the face of theirs friends/ Friends make life’s journey more enjoyable/ Seeing a good friend brings a smile to our faces and joy to our hearts/

Another shade of meaning expressed by the Hebrew word is similar to that expressed in our English usage of the word “face.” /Paniym can convey the idea of how a person sees things/ Friends help us gain a clearer perspective on issues that may concern or confuse us/ They help us understand the reality of situations when we are oblivious to the obvious. /Real friends place honesty over the opinions of others.

A third shade of meaning is, “That which goes in front of.”/In the midst of hard days, difficult decisions, or even personal failures, friends help friends see things in front of them a little better/ Friends provide a glimpse of a future with more possibility. Friends see what you think can’t be done, and help you believed you can do it/ The first lesson of this proverb is simple: Our choice of friends is critical/

In 2nd Timothy 2:22, Paul brings together a statement that helps me see the remedy for spiritual dullness in my life/ To his young friend in the ministry Paul writes, “Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace.”/ This is good advice and had Paul not given further instruction, it would be a very strong word of encouragement/ But this verse goes on to include the words, “along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” /

Paul told Timothy that his choice of friends was critical./ The people that you choose to call your friends are critical because your friends sharpen you; they determine how you see the future and how you set your values/

Just who are our friends these days?/ Our friends are not always the best friends for us/ They may be friends of a television sitcom or the cultural heroes from our sports and entertainment worlds/ Often, they don’t stand for the things we say we believe in, yet we spend time with them each and every week/ We adjust our schedules to visit with them, and we are always on time/ If we can’t be with them, we set our VCR’S./ In the process we grow spiritually dull/ I wonder what Jerry Springer stands for other than Trash…?/

Our choice of friends may even be taking a critical, unrecoverable toll on the relationships that are supposed to be primary to us/ We are left with a dull marriage, a dull relationship with our children, or even a dull sense of intimacy with our Heavenly Father/ God doesn’t intend for us to lose our sharpness in these arrears/ We choose spiritual dullness when we choose to wrong friends/

Spiritual dullness is dangerous for at least three reasons:

1) Spiritual dullness means that we have lost the discerning edge in life and no longer cut well.
A dull scalpel lacks the sufficient edge to remove a cancerous growth/ No surgeon would want to make an uncertain incision/ It’s too dangerous/ Just as sharpness is valued to the physician, so spiritual sharpness matters to the believer/

2) Spiritual dullness requires us to overcompensate in the flesh.
A dull knife can cause an accident due to the user’s overcompensation for its dullness/Using unnecessary force, the blade could slip and cause damage to others/ This happens when we are spiritually dull/ We overcompensate by relying on our own strengths instead of God’s strength/ When this happens, we always live with regret/

3) A danger is that pretty soon; we get used to dullness and learn to live with it:
We give up trying to please God because we feel we never will/ We get used to a life with no spiritual passion and no spiritual direction, we are not angry with God, we’ve just grown spiritually dull and assume that He understands or doesn’t mine/

It isn’t God’s intent for us to live spiritually dull lives/ This is why He gives us such a powerful image in this proverb/ Our choice of friends is critical/ Choosing better friends may be the most spiritual thing we do today/

Your choice to be a friend is critical:

There is a second lesson in this proverb, and it’s easy to forget/ Not only is your choice of friends critical, but your choice to be a friend is critical as well/ There are people in your sphere of influence who need a real friend/ Let me show you what I mean/
Take this knife for example, and think of it as someone God has put in your sphere of influence/ Now see yourself as this wet rock/ Listen to the sound that friendship makes. This is the sound of friendship/

I talked with several friends over the last couple of weeks since my daddy fell and then passed away/ Each time as we talked I was encouraged and lifted up/ When we talked this is what it sounded like in my mind and heart/ The godly friends cared enough about me and my family to take time for us/ I would share my thoughts and they would share their experiences from what they had already gone through/

Some of you have been like this knife in the past/ You were dull and in need of someone with love and character who would let you rub up against them for awhile/ Remember that was friendship/ Today, there are some of you who need to become like this wet rock/ It’s been around a while/ It’s sharpened many blades in the past. / Somewhere near you there is someone needing to be sharpened/ All you have to do is listen/

Next object I have here is similar to a wet rock or steele, but it’s for difficult task/ It’s a steel file/ A file smoothes out the rough spots in our lives./ Listen to the sound of friendship it makes/

God knows the rough edges in our lives/ I have mine, and you have yours/ In His wisdom, God allows people to come into our lives who serve as the file to smooth away the rough spots that have emerged from pride and ego/ These people love us, but they have the gift of confrontation and are not afraid to use it/ I don’t always enjoy the confrontation, but I have grown to appreciate the work that God does through them in my life/

The next object that demonstrates the truth of Iron sharpening is this old pair of shears/The shepherd holds the sheep with one hand, and with the other hand he carefully cut the wool off the body of the sheep…/…shears are made by joining two blades together with rivets/ These rivets were not intended to come apart/ You cannot shear the sheep with only one of these blades./ You can kill the sheep with only one blade, but you cannot shear it/

This serves as an important lesson for us/ The kingdom work that we’ve been called to do will not be accomplished by individual effort nor by complete union of thought/ It takes all of us/ Together, we can do more for the kingdom that we can individually/ These shears could represent our church, your marriage, this Sunday school class, or even our church staff/ But each time, they point to the image of us working together with others/ When the blades cross, they sharpen each other/ Iron sharpens iron, and friends sharpen friends.

Personal relationships matter/ Remember what Paul said in closing his letter to the Philippians church?/“I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to agree with each other in the Lord.” (Phil: 4:2) Again he said, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone” (Romans 12:18.) We simply do not have the luxury of living out of fellowship with other believers/ If we think we do, we are duller than we thought.

My last object is an anvil/ I was going to bring one but it was just to heavy to lift all by my self/ This just shows that I need help to do the things that need to be done/ The anvil was my daddy’s/ It weighs about 150 pounds/ When I was young I could pick it up several times in succession/ It has not changed much in all these years./ It came from a blacksmith back in my daddy’s family’s history/ It was made in the eighteen hundreds./Unlike me, it has not lost its shape in all the years since it was made.

The smitty would heat the object in the fire until it was white-hot/ Then, he would place it on the anvil and strike it with a hammer over and over again/ When necessary, he would heat it again in the fire and repeat the process—from the fire to the hammer, the fire to the hammer, again and again—until the object was perfected.

But listen to the lesson I learned/ You are not the fire/ You are not the hammer/ But in a world where both exist, we need friends who are as steady as the anvil/ God uses the fiery trails and the hammering struggles we go through in life to perfect our character/ God also used the friends who are willing to come along side us supporting us, encouraging us in difficult times/ Being a friend means that we are going to remain loyal in tough times/

These objects provide for us the feel and sound of friendship/ “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friends.”

Friendship is characterized by the sounds of praying, mentoring, holding high expectations, listening, confronting, forgiving, caring, and modeling/ “Friends sharpenfriends.”

The Seven Keys to Choosing Your Friends Are:

1. Do they have a good track record?
You can tell a lot about people by what they have done/ A lot of people talk the talk but the question is, are they actually living what they are talking about?/ Jesus said we can know a person by his fruit or actions (Matt. 12:33)/ They can say they are moral and have high standards, but what do their actions say?

2. Do they respect your principles?
You have strong morals and say, I’m going to do what is right and your so called friends try to get you to do otherwise then you need to get rid of these so called friends/ Then GET AWAY! (Prov. 13:20).

3. Do they give or receive ministry from you?
Jesus said if you are not hot or cold, He will spew you out of His mouth/ Don’t be neutral/ I also don’t want to spend most of my time with people that are neutral/ I really enjoy hanging around people that I can give to, and will receive from me; or people that deposit good character into my life/ I’ve found that my close friends do both/ There are some days God really gives me something for them and other times they have something for me.

4. Do they sharpen your ax?
Are you improved by being with this person? / I thank God for people that sharpen me and make me a better person, and that’s exactly what good friends will do (Prov. 27:17)/ It’s essential to have friends that sharpen and challenge us, egging us on to excellence.

5. Do they build you up?
God wants us built up, not beat up/ I’ve found some people, because of their personal self-esteem, love to rip the people they are around to shreds with their words/ I wonder, why would anybody hang around somebody like that? / Just to be accepted by them?/ You don’t need to waste your time with people like that/ We are to encourage one another and build each other up/ Make sure the people you spend your time with do the same (1 Thess. 5:11).

6.Do they treat others well?
I’ve got a friend that told me the quickest way to find out about someone is to find out what he is saying about others/ If people are selfish and judgmental toward others, I can promise eventually they will be that way toward you (Rom. 13:9).

7. Do they encourage your destiny?
I am so grateful for the people God brings across my path! / Those friends will believe in you more that you believe in yourself/ They see something in you that nobody else sees!/ They don’t want to take advantage of your gifts or control you for their personal advantage, but they want to see you walk in God’s destiny, reaching your full, rich potential.
The people we should be hanging with should be encouragers and not discouragers. God puts it this way in Ephesians 4:29: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

If a person is not a wholesome talker, and isn’t building you up for your benefit, find someone who is.

If you want to grow and maximize your gifts and calling, choosing your friends is one of the most important decisions you will ever make/

Remember, if we want friends in our lives that have these seven qualities, we need to show ourselves friendly with the same qualities (Prov. 18:24).

Breakout From Emotional Strongholds

Breakout~!!
Perhaps you have heard the story of the man who was hiking alone in the mountains when he slipped and fell off a cliff. The only thing that kept him from plunging to his death down a deep gorge was a tree growing from the side of the cliff. As he fell, the hiker grabbed a limb and hung on for dear life.
Clinging tightly to the tree limb, the man began shouting desperately, hoping that someone might be coming along the trail behind him. "Help! Help! Is there anyone up there?" But no answer came back.
Finally, as he neared exhaustion, and his grip on the tree limb began to weaken, the hiker yelled again in total desperation, "Is there anyone up there?"
This time, a booming voice answered, "Yes, I'm here."
The hiker was elated. "This is great! Who are you?"
"It's the Lord."
"Oh, thank You, Lord!" the hiker gasped. "What do you want me to do?"
"Let go, and I'll catch you."
But the terrified hiker was too afraid to let go of the limb. So he cried out again, "Is there anyone up there?"
The Lord answered again, "I said, let go of the limb, and I'll save you."
But the hiker couldn't bring himself to let go of the only piece of security he thought he had. So after thinking about it for a minute, he shouted, "Is there anyone else up there?"
That fictional hiker is like a lot of real-life Christians who are clinging desperately to all manner of emotional security blankets. These believers often think their twisted-up emotions are their source of security, when in fact; these emotional problems are the very things keeping them from being really free.
What Christians in this situation need to do is what the hiker in our story needed to do: Let go of that which cannot rescue them anyway and trust God to honor His promises.
My goal for this message is to help people in bondage to various emotions and anxieties break free through the truth of God's Word and the power of the Holy Spirit. We'll address the anxiety first, and then I want to give you biblical examples and patterns for handling the emotional storms of life that are sure to come your way.
The word I will be using for these traps (into which even Christians can fall) is stronghold. My prayer is that all people along with Christians in these predicaments will learn to understand and apply the Bible to their lives in ways that they can let go of any emotional stronghold the Enemy may have built in their lives.
Freedom Is Available
If you or someone you care about is in the grip of an emotional stronghold such as anger, depression, fear, worry—or even some sort of substance abuse—I am here to tell you that there is freedom available in Jesus Christ.
The world's word for things that hold people hostage is addiction. We hear it said that people are addicted to drugs, alcohol, sex, or whatever it may be. The problem I have with this word is the insinuation it often has that they or we are powerless victims of circumstances.
In other words, calling something an addiction suggests that we have an excuse for what we're doing, either because we don't have the ability to break it, someone else caused it and thus it isn't our fault, or we have bad genes or a bad environment that set us up for this problem. Some people may even say their addiction has all of these elements.
Now I know that many psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals would argue that the concept of addiction doesn't mean there is no way out. But for our purposes in this message, I'm not interested in what the professionals say nearly as much as I am in the popular observation of what it means to have an addiction—for two reasons.
The first reason is that I believe the average person thinks of an addiction as something that is somehow not the victim's responsibility, which often helps the person dodge the real issue. The second reason is that calling something an addiction doesn't address the spiritual dimension of the problem, which is needed to find the answer!!!!
The word stronghold takes us to the real issue because it takes us to our spiritual makeup and to the Word of God. When we get the spiritual part of the equation fixed, the emotional and the physical parts will begin to fall in line.
The Enemy's Strongholds
The New International Version of the Bible says, "The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds" (2 Corinthians 10:4).

A stronghold is like a fortress the Enemy has built on your turf, which is why the New American Standard Bible translates this word as "fortresses."

Our Enemy, of course, is Satan, who can build strongholds in our minds and hearts if we allow him to gain a foothold in our lives. The Devil is a relentless Enemy who is not content just to conquer territory in your life. He wants to erect strongholds, which he can then use as his base of operations to attack you whenever he feels like it.

When you have an enemy who can take refuge in his stronghold and come out from it to attack you at will, you won't get anywhere until you tear down that stronghold and leave the Enemy with no place to hide.

Our emotions are particularly defenseless to satanic attack because emotions are feelings that have no intellect of their own. An emotion is a deep-down, often immediate and intense, reaction to something that happens to us.

People who are in emotional strongholds usually know something is wrong. When they get up they don't say, "Good morning, Lord," but "Good Lord, its morning!" They are in such a hurry that they don’t take time to pray or read from the Word. These people are caught in the stronghold of busyness.

In severe cases these people may feel as if they are struggling just to survive because they feel hopeless and can't seem to shake the emotional traps they're in.
Emotional strongholds are attitudes that result in actions that hold a person hostage to something contrary to the will of God. We need action but we need action moving toward the right power.

God never ordained for His children to go to bed and wake up depressed every day of their lives. All of us have times when we struggle with our emotions because we are imperfect people living in a fallen world. But strongholds are feelings or actions that dominate your life and consume most of your time and effort. (Enabling is a stronghold also)

For many Christians, the cause of their emotional disturbance is not the emotions themselves. It is because they have not understood their true identity in Christ or learned to live by grace—so they don't know how to respond to the spiritual causes of their attitude of distress. When I say distress, I mean the emotional longing for what ever it is that Satan has used to pull down your defenses.

Three Wrong Ways to Deal with Emotional Strongholds

A person who is in emotional distress but doesn't look for the spiritual root of the problem is like someone who turns off the smoke alarm in his house and opens the windows to let the smoke out without ever looking for the fire.

As you know, those are wrong ways to deal with a house fire because all they do is mask the symptoms instead of solving the problem. In the same way, many people use the wrong methods to deal with emotional strongholds because they fail to understand their true nature. I see at least three ways that people try to deal with the pain of an emotional problem without really confronting it.

The first of these is through outright denial, which could be called suppression. This is when a person knows something is wrong but makes a conscious and deliberate effort to run from or bury the problem. Often running from the problem leads the person straight to (Ida Mae’s house.) People in this situation may constantly insist they are fine and everything is cool when they know that's not true. The truth is they don’t know how to handle the problem. They continue to let the problem over take them, helping to strengthen the stronghold against them.

A second faulty way to deal with emotional strongholds is through repression, or unconscious denial. This is where the pain may be so intense that the person has pushed it deep down below the level of consciousness. These people may no longer be aware of why they feel the way they feel or do the things they do. Someone's denial may be conscious at first, but if it goes on long enough, the person may actually succeed in pushing the problem out of consciousness. Doing this the person become a cold face liar. He not only lies to himself, but also to any body anywhere, anytime. He will even use dog urine for his drug test…and swear with a straight face that he has not done drugs or whatever.

A third wrong way to deal with such problems is to bury them with busyness, drown them in alcohol, or try to drug them out of existence. Those in this category who don't fall into substance abuse may stay on the go constantly, or always make sure that either the television or some other noise is going at all times—so they don't have to hear the alarm going off in their souls.
Remember when you were a child and you didn't want to hear what your brother or sister was saying? You would put your hands over your ears and shout, "I can't hear you!" or start singing to drown them out. That's fine for kids, but it's a terrible way to live as an adult. (I see my grand kids do this quite often)

Painful emotions are like the pain signals our bodies send out to alert us that something is wrong. You can ignore or deny pain, but if there is something really wrong it will not just go away. Just as when we are in physical pain and need to go to the doctor to find out why. When we are hurting emotionally we need to find out why.
Please don't misunderstand what I said about the fields of psychology and psychiatry. When practiced correctly—that is, biblically—the mental health disciplines can help people discover and correct what is wrong. But when there is a failure to take the spiritual side of an issue into account, or to see that emotional problems have spiritual roots, then only the symptoms are being addressed.

The Cause of Emotional Strongholds

Emotional strongholds are fortresses the Enemy has built in our minds and hearts. They are built on his lies about who we are and what has happened to us or what we have done. This means that the root cause of these problems has a lot to do with the Enemy's specialty, which is either trying to lead us into sin or ensnaring us in our own sin or someone else's sin until we are completely bound up. (Also, when one member of a family gets bound up, it usually binds up the rest of the family.) (Satan is trying to build a stronghold in the family unit itself for his destructive purpose.)

I don't want to deny or dismiss the fact that some emotional problems have physiological ties. There is a strong link between the physical and emotional parts of our makeup, because we are whole beings and are not made up of separate compartments. For example, if you are told you have cancer and you react with fear, that fear has a basis in fact. Feeling fear in the face of cancer is a normal reaction, not a stronghold.

But the kind of bondage the Bible calls a stronghold is rooted either in our own sin, in the sin of someone else, or in the fact that we live in a sin-tainted environment. You may have been abused as a child, and as a result of the abuser's sin against you, you are in emotional bondage as an adult.

Now you may be dealing with this in sinful ways with drugs or alcohol, or by taking out your anger on someone else. But in any case, the root cause of emotional strongholds is sin—which is why any solution that doesn't address the spiritual issue is not really a solution. (Please understand this, all the cases of Satan built strongholds, are started with SIN.)

The Bible reveals that the entry of negative emotions into the human race was because of sin. God put Adam and Eve in a perfect environment, but as we see in Genesis, chapter 3, Satan came onto the scene and enticed first Eve, and then Adam, to rebel against God. The first thing that happened after they ate the forbidden fruit was, "The eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings" (Genesis 3:7).

Before this, Adam and Eve had been naked but without shame (Genesis 2:25). But now they were ashamed of their nakedness and had to cover themselves. The emotion of shame entered into the human race. There was also fear, for in Genesis 3:9-10 we read that Adam and Eve hid (DRUGS ETC) when they heard the sound of God walking in the garden. "Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, 'Where are you?' He said, 'I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.' "

And it gets worse. The murder of Abel by Cain involved the emotions of jealousy, anger, and hatred on Cain's part because God accepted his brother's offering while rejecting his.

It's interesting that Cain was also depressed. When Cain's bloodless sacrifice was rejected, "his countenance fell" (Genesis 4:5). But instead of dealing with his emotions by turning to God in repentance and faith, his anger drove him inwardly into depression and outwardly into murder. Depression is well described as anger turned inward. (Not all but some)

There is quite a long list of powerful emotions and destructive patterns of behavior that entered the human race through sin. That's why a person who is trying to overcome a stronghold without looking to the spiritual reason for it will never find the source of the fire in his emotional house. He will hear the shrill sound of the fire alarm, but his efforts will be geared toward silencing that alarm.

Now for fear that you doubt the causative connection between sin and emotional strongholds, look at what God said to Cain when He saw that Cain was angry and depressed. "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it" (Genesis 4:6-7).

This was probably the first counseling session in history, and God the Counselor went straight to the heart of the problem! Sin wanted to master Cain by holding him in bondage to his wrong thoughts and the resulting wrong emotions.

Three Categories of Emotional Strongholds

Let me briefly mention three common categories of emotional strongholds, relating to where we are in our lives. The first category is those strongholds that are rooted in the pain of the past.

This may be childhood abuse, as previously mentioned, or some other shocking experience in the past that is impairing the person’s ability to function today. (I am not sure but it could come from divorce of the parents of the captive person or persons. It could stem from a long list of things that has happened in the lives of the infected person.) (Infected with sin)

These experiences are like recordings in the mind that keep rewinding and playing every time something triggers the bad memory. Satan keeps his finger on the re-play button, and he's an expert at knowing what it takes to start that recording running again.

He doesn't stop there either. He'll try to make sure that every time you replay that past trauma, it seems worse than the time before. He'll add to it until it seems as if your whole life is in bondage to the past. He will also use the past memory or whatever it was to trigger the person to go get the drugs or alcohol or whatever it is that he wanted the person to get to in the first place. Satan is the great deceiver!!

Here's one other trick the Devil likes to play on you when you are being held bondage to the emotions of past traumas. He will bring people into your life that went through what you went through and have not been victorious over it—and soon you'll be caught up in their lack of victory because misery loves company.

A second category of strongholds is made up of problems in the present. What is going on in your life right now may be overwhelming you. If anybody could have been depressed and in bondage to his circumstances, it was the apostle Paul. He wrote about what he had endured for the gospel's sake:
[I have been] beaten times without number, often in danger of death. Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep. I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among false brethren; I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. Apart from such external things, there is the daily pressure on me of concern for all the churches. (2 Corinthians 11:23-28)

Few of us could put together a list of trials that could compare to this. But instead of throwing in the towel or hiding in a corner, Paul moved on because he had learned that his sufferings were the key to God's power within him. As he put it, "When I am weak, then I am strong" (2 Corinthians 12:10). We can hold to this truth in our struggles as well, but we have to make a conscious effort to operate under the “Power of God”.

A third category of strongholds relates to the future. Many people are so afraid of what might happen that they don't want to get out of bed in the morning. As bad as it is to be held in bondage to the past or the present, it may even be crueler to be a prisoner to tomorrow, especially if our fear centers on a bunch of "what-ifs" that haven't even happened. What if I get cancer or have a heart attack? What if one of my children dies?

Jesus told us, "Do not worry about tomorrow" (Matthew 6:34). Fear of tomorrow is another emotional trap the Enemy has laid for us.

The Cure for Emotional Strongholds

We've already seen that trying to deny or suppress painful emotions doesn't do any good, nor does it help to try and avoid them by keeping busy and never facing them. That doesn't work because Satan always has another thing around the corner. The busier we are and the more we are on the go, the more strongholds Satan can build in our lives.

So don't try to tell yourself there's nothing wrong when you know better. And don't listen to other people who are telling you just to snap out of it or get over it. I love the epitaph that a person who was considered the town hypochondriac had engraved on his tombstone: "I told you I was sick."
Emotions are real, but I want to stress something. Emotions have no intellect of their own. Our emotions only respond to what we think. They are by-products of our thought lives. Therefore, whoever controls our thoughts determines how we feel.
If the Devil is controlling your thinking, you'll feel the way he wants you to feel. If God is controlling your thinking, you'll feel the way God wants you to feel. The reason is, as the Bible says, "As [a man] thinks within himself, so he is" (Proverbs 23:7). A persons thinking is the key to overcoming emotional strongholds.
Jesus said, "You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free" (John 8:32). Notice that He said it is not enough just to hear the truth but to know it—to let the truth of God's Word settle down in your mind and begin to shape the way you think. When you do that, then you will be set free.

(Here we see the horse and water thing. I can tell a person what to do, God can tell a person what to do but until the person becomes a doer of the Word, he is helpless to control his strongholds.)

I turned on the light in a bathroom in a gas station the other day, and the roaches scattered everywhere. Satan and his demons are like cockroaches when the light comes on. They scatter because Satan can't handle the truth. He can handle you and your ideas, but when you come at this issue of strongholds from the perspective of what God says, you will experience a change in your thinking that will result in a change in your emotions.

Many Christians have never come to grips with their true identity in Christ, that is, they are a "new creature" for whom "the old things passed away; behold, new things have come" (2 Corinthians 5:17).

If you are still operating on the basis of your old identity in Adam, you are bound to feel the way the Devil wants you to feel because he controlled you when you were still in Adam—that is, still in your sins.
Part of your new identity in Christ is the power He gives you to overcome any attack or lie of the Enemy. One of the introductory passages in this study is 2 Corinthians 10:4 (NIV): "The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds."
If we did not have the power as new creatures in Christ to demolish Satan's strongholds in our hearts and minds, then God would not command us to control our thinking, as He does in Philippians 4:8. Paul gave a list of things that are right and wholesome and godly, and then wrote, "Dwell on these things."
T
he human mind cannot entertain two contradictory thoughts at the same time. Therefore, you cannot dwell on both the things of God and the lies of Satan. One or the other will eventually win the battle for your mind. And the winner of this battle gains the ground on which to build either a “Tower of truth” that protects you against Satan's attacks—or a stronghold that keeps you in bondage.
Now don't misunderstand. If you have been held captive in an emotional stronghold for any length of time, this thing is not going to fall all at once. Sure, there are times when God gives instantaneous deliverance, but those are the exceptions to the rule.
Most of the time, you take a stronghold apart brick by brick—by focusing your mind on Jesus Christ and developing an intimacy with Him that grows and grows until His thoughts are becoming your thoughts. And the way you do that is by saturating your mind with His Word, seeking Him in prayer and fasting, and obeying the truth as the Spirit reveals it to you.
A Word of Encouragement
Whatever it is that is causing you to feel the way you feel right now is never the last word. Whatever is going wrong in your life, as long as God is on His throne, He can give you the last word on your situation. When we treat our emotions as the final statement, we miss out on the truth of a great word that Jesus gave us in John 16:33. "In the world you have tribulation."
You say, “that's not encouraging news”. Well, I'd be lying to you if I told you that you will never have any more trials and battles, or that the Enemy will leave you alone once you learn how to tear down his strongholds. But read on in John 16:33. Jesus said, "Take courage; I have overcome the world." This is the last word!
If we are truly His and He has overcome the world them when we truly, thoroughly allow Him in us, then we become what the Bible calls “Overcomers”.
Lone Ranger had Tonto
The Lone Ranger was a good, strong hero, but he could not have made it without his Indian companion, Tonto. Many times when the Lone Ranger couldn’t take care of everything that was coming his way, he had his good friend to support and help in time of extra trouble.
I said that because I want to mention the critical role of the church in helping believers overcome emotional strongholds. If you are fighting these things as a "Lone ranger Christian” without connecting yourself to a local church, you are out of the will of God.
But more than that, trying to make it on your own is about as effective as one lone soldier facing an army. You can't do it alone, and you weren't designed to. You need the encouragement and the ministry of the church.
The church is the place to find people who will help you keep your eyes on the Lord when you can't see Him. The church may not be able to solve all your problems, but God's people can help you focus on Him so that you're not drowned by what you're going through.
—BREAKOUT!! From emotional strongholds!!!

To breakout and stay out it will take constant reinforcement from the Word of God.

That’s my story and I am sticking to it.

Malfunction in Paradise

Text: Genesis Chap. 3:1-10
Well heck, lets just get straight to the point: I am getting tired of babysitting grown men! Grown men ought to know how to take care of themselves, and I don’t mean, know how to get the girls, dope and booze they think they need…

I am so tired of watching good men go to hell… I’m don’t necessarily mean the real hell but, what some of these men put themselves through has to be close to the real thing.

So many men I have come in contact with, often at first, seem to be doing fine… But time always tells the truth... What is that truth? If you hang around someone long enough you will start to find out just what they are made of or what they truly stand for.

Some proclaim Christ, and say they love Him; others whom I still respect, say all that stuff about God is a crop of bull and they go through life doing just what they want… But listen, I see so-called Christians proclaiming Christ but yet they fall into the same lifestyle as the non-believers do.

What is the problem? What is the answer? Why do so many people seemingly come to Christ only to fall back into the pit of a sinful lifestyle?

There is many different ways that I could go right now with this message, but I want for the most part to focus on #1) “Why does it happen” and #2) “What can be done”?

THE MALFUNCITIONING HUMAN BEING:
I read a story the other day about the maker of all human beings recalling all units manufactured, regardless of make or year, due to the serious defect in the primary and central component of the heart… They said it was due to a malfunction in the original prototype units; code named Adam and Eve, resulting in the reproduction of the same defect in all following units… This defect has been technically termed, “Sub sequential Internal Malfunction,” or more commonly known as SIN.

Some of the symptoms from this prototype are, “loss of direction, foul vocal emissions, amnesia of righteousness, lack of peace and joy, selfish or violent behavior, depression or confusion in the mental compartment, fearfulness, idolatry, and rebellion…” Often this unit fails to get started and often, if it does get started, fails to reach its authorized destination in the given prearranged time… Often this units tries to run off of something that it was not designed to run off of… It was designed to run “off of God” but almost always tries to run on “self.”

The Manufacturer, who is neither liable, nor at fault for this defect, is providing factory authorized repair and service free of charge to correct this SIN defect… The Repair Technician, Jesus, has most generously offered to bear the entire burden of the staggering cost of these repairs… The number to call for repair in all arrears is: P R A Y ER!

Once connected, please upload your burden of SIN through the REPENTANCE procedure. Next, download, ATTONEMENT, from the repair technician, Jesus, into the heart component. No matter how big or small the SIN defect is, Jesus will replace it with, Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Then after all this has been done, the unit will again be supplied with an operating manual… The manual gives instruction in righteousness and really tells the unit how to handle itself in life no matter what… Right on the front cover it says, “HOLY BIBLE.”
As and added upgrade, the Manufacturer has made available to all repaired units a facility enabling direct monitoring and assistance from a live-in resident, All repaired units need only make Him welcome and He will take up permanent residence on the premises.
MAIN IDEA:

The fall of mankind into sin produces conditions of alienation from the Creator God, from fellow human beings, and from the created world.

THE TEMPTATION TO SIN: WHY DOES IT HAPPEN. (Gen. 3:1-5.) 1) Now the serpents was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’”? 2) The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden 3) but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” 4) “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5) “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be open, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Genesis 3 begins with the temptation experienced by the woman and the man not to trust God… By some unreadable providence, the voice of temptation comes to the human person from outside himself, yet from within the created order… It is in God’s Garden that evil is to be found… Within a Garden in which God Himself was prepared to take the risk of human freedom, we now read of something evil.

Now, seemingly at the start of a life in paradise comes a time when human beings are faced with the question of their responsible choice… Part of the freedom of the Garden is the freedom not to trust God… Once that choice is taken, as the story of chapter three will make clear, it is a choice against every other freedom, which is ours in fellowship with God.

The freedom not to trust God becomes the doorway to the loss of freedom itself… And the human being is faced with that choice by the tempting voice of the serpent.

SUPPORTINS IDEA:
Temptation occurs when Eve questions the word and the character of God. The same truth speaks for each person alive today, everywhere.
This is the same thing we do when we choose to sin! We question and doubt God!

Before we go any farther, I want to say to all who are listening to the sound of my voice, we are at war… We are in a spiritual war 24/7, 365 days a year…but listen to this also, the serpent is a defeated foe… Jesus Christ defeated him at Calvary’s cross… Right now he is out on bail doing his best to pull down any and everyone who will give even the slightest glance… If you give the devil an inch, he will be your ruler.

Why does Satan tempt us??? Temptation is Satan’s invitation to give in to his kind of life… Satan tempted Eve and succeeded in getting her to sin…ever since then he’s been busy getting people to sin… He even tempted Jesus, but Jesus did not sin!

How could have Eve resisted temptation? By following the same guidelines we can follow.

First, we must realize that being tempted is not a sin… We have not sinned until we give in to the temptation…

Then to resist the temptation, we must…
1) Pray for strength to resist,
2) Run, sometimes literally, and
3) Say no when confronted with what we know is wrong… James 1:12, tells of blessings and rewards for those who don’t give in when tempted.
In these verses, Satan, tempted Eve by getting her to doubt God’s goodness… He implied that God was strict, and selfish for not wanting Eve to share His knowledge of good and evil…
**Satan made Eve forget all about what God had already given her and, instead, focus on the one thing she could not have… We fall into trouble, also, when we dwell on the few things we don’t have… Listen, consider all you do have and thank God… Then your doubts won’t lead you into sin.
**The Serpent caused Eve to question the Word of God… (How well do you know the Word) He planted doubt in her mind when he asked, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden.’” Now What God had said to the man was, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of knowledge of good an evil, for when you eat of it, you will surely die.”

Notice how the Evil one, through the serpent, focused on the negative, the prohibition, rather than on the generosity of God… The serpent did not dare suggest that perhaps if God had withheld this tree from humanity, it was not needed by humans…God’s prohibition was really His line of protection. (Some things are not needed!!! Drugs, booze, sexual relations outside of wedlock, lying, stealing, envy, pride, covet, etc.)

Notice also, that the Evil One addressed the woman and not the man…It was the man whom God had originally given His disclosure about the food that they were to eat…Apparently Adam had passed on to Eve what God had declared to him before she was created…

(My direct word to you, is to be obedient to the Word of God by learning the Word and then by living it and by doing it, in your every move in life. )

Eve would come to understand that God’s word is not just generally true; it’s absolutely and precisely true…God says what He means—and He means what He says…This understanding of the absolute authority of God’s Word is necessary for mankind to acknowledge, so he, (man) might respond to life’s temptations in a God-honoring manner.

Satan’s response to Eve’s somewhat less-than accurate understanding of God’s Word was to deny that God’s Word was true: “You will not surely die.” This contradicted God’s revealed word to Adam…The very first doctrine in Scripture that Satan denied is that sin results in death, (or to put it another way, Satan declared that God would not punish sin…) If he could have God’s created human being, thinking this, then sinning would not seem to serious…Sin is a matter of life and death… Death in a family, a relationship……….etc…

Now before we go any farther with this message, I want to talk about some of the Devil’s techniques.

A) Often his approach is Subtle and unexpected.
The Scripture say, “The serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD god had made” Gen: 3:1a…

Other translations say that the serpent was more subtle than the other creatures God had created…

I think it is clear that Eve had no idea what was about to happen to her…why should she? She’s quite literally in paradise…Up to this point, there has never been a “Malfunction in paradise,” but here it comes…It’s not as if she got up that day and thought to herself,

“I’d better have my quiet time today because a talking serpent is going to tempt me to sin… If I give in, I’ll bring heartache, misery, sadness, despair, loneliness, trouble, murder, mayhem, hatred, and every form of evil to billions of people for thousands of years to come.”

No, it wasn’t like that at all…She wasn’t expecting to encounter a talking serpent or to be tempted to commit the first sin…

She wasn’t looking for the serpent, but the serpent was definitely looking for her…And guess what??? He’s definitely looking for you right now!

This story from the pages of God’s Word is a warning for each of us that SATAN is looking 24/7… The devil does not give up stalking you, especially if you are a Christian…

God’s Word tells us, “Be sober, (Clear headed) be vigilant; (Watchful) because your adversary (Opponent or enemy) the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” (1st Peter 5:8)

We need to know and remember and be aware that the devil has many different ways in which he stalks his prey… Often he is like a wild animal that’s looks for the weak sheep to slaughter…In one way or the other he is always seeking to strike paralyzing fear into his victim, often with a loud roar but also he can come into your life when things seem to be going so well…He often uses a subtle approach…

Define subtle: So slight as to be difficult to notice… Crafty, shrewd, slight, delicate, faint, cunning, sly, understated, clever etc, in other words the serpent was slick.

In my mind eye, I can see Eve walking along the banks of the river that ran through the garden of Eden…It’s a sunny day and she surely is enjoying the beauty of all that surrounds her…I can see the breeze blowing through her long beautiful hair…I can almost feel the soft grass as it pushes up through her squeaky clean toes…If I look off in the distance, there are gracious flowers blooming all around and singing birds are flying all around calling out to each other about the beauty in this God made paradise.

Then she spots the serpent… She doesn’t run away in fear like my wife does when she sees a spider… Why should she run??? There is as of now, “no fear”, in paradise.

Have you ever seen a snake lying on the ground or maybe, just so smoothly gliding across the ground on his way to his next destination??? Often they look beautiful, with the many colors all-blending together in a captivating sort of way… It makes you almost want to reach out and touch it… So it was with Eve…when this serpent speaks, his voice is penetrating and appealing… His voice is cunning, sly, clever, delicate and slick. (SIN)**

I want to say this right now… Eve truly didn’t realize what was happening to her and she messed up and made a bad choice…that caused the…

THE FALL INTO SIN: 3:6.

Verse 6) When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was there with her, and he ate it.

How did Adam and Eve get like this??? It was a series of little steps in the wrong direction…But those small steps added up to one huge catastrophe that still haunts the world today…
Satan promised liberation through rebellion…What they got was slavery, sin, shame, fear and death…Let us learn one overarching truth from this lesson: Every temptation is a lie wrapped in a promise of freedom…

Satan is the father of lies…He lies consistently…He lies because it is his nature to lie…He is the first and greatest deceiver…All Satan’s apples have worms…

Failure to appreciate God’s goodness leads to distrust of His goodness…Distrust leads to dissatisfaction and finally to dis-obedience…
God’s prohibition (Ban) as well as His provisions are for our own good…but mankind wants to be independent, to go his own way, to be subject to no one…

God has always asked people to believe and trust His Word…God has always asked people to believe that He is sovereign and good…His desire is that we trust Him so we will live abundantly (John 10:10; 17:3)…God has always asked people to believe that true satisfaction comes by obeying Him and respecting His prohibitions—He wants us to live by faith, not by sight…

I have heard people say, “if temptation gave us a warning call we would be much better prepared to handle it…”

But right now we need to know that temptation often does, give us a warning call…When we read verse 6, it could not have been a warning for Eve because she never has seen verse 6 or any other verse, but it is a warning for us…

Notice the threefold temptation experienced by Eve.

1) It calls to us from the “Practical level” which is from the lust of the flesh…A warning here is when we hunger for or desire something that is not inline with the Word of God…”The fruit was good to eat.” …Listen…When you are confronted with something that you know you should not do, don’t… Each time you eat of the fruit of sin, the consequences will be worse…

2) Another warning here is from the “Emotional level.” “It looked beautiful to Her.” This comes from the lust of the eyes…Often we see something and it makes us want it…
It could be a good looking, man or woman, etc…

Bottom line, we really know what is good for us and what is not…It’s all about making the right choices…Adam and Eve made a bad choice in the Garden of Eden, that not only shaped the rest of their lives but it also produced hardship for all of mankind, forever…

When you and I make bad decisions and that decision ends up hurting us, it also hurts the ones we love and the ones that love us… Our negative decisions many times hurt our family and friends before we realize it is hurting or literally killing us…

Bad choices are responsible for the deaths of many innocent people each day…If we, as people, created in the image of God, want to do the things in this life that are right, then we need to get real, and start thinking about what we are thinking about which, if we have any sense left at all, will lead into making the right choices… ***

3) The next warning comes from, “The Spiritual Level.” The serpent convinced the woman to eat because the, fruit would make her wise, that’s the pride of life…

Satan used a sincere motive to tempt Eve—“You will be like God…” It was not wrong for Eve to want to be like God…To become more like God is humanities highest goal…It’s what we are supposed to do…But Satan misled Eve** concerning the right way to accomplish this goal…
He told her that she could become more like God by disregarding God’s authority, by taking God’s place and deciding for herself what was best for her life…In effect, he told here to become her own god…
****To become like God is not the same as trying to become God…Rather, it is to reflect His characteristics and to recognize His authority over our life…We may not realize it but we do the same thing Eve did…When we sin, we over look God’s authority in our lives and make excuses that make whatever it is we are doing, or want to do, seem ok…
We become our own god, exalting self rather than being lead by God…Self-exaltation leads to rebellion against God…As soon as we begin to leave God out of our plans, we are placing ourselves above Him…This is the pride of life, self-exaltation which leads us to…

RESULTS OF THE FALL INTO SIN: 3:7-13

When Adam and Eve sinned; it affected not only their relationship with God but also their relationship with each other and with the rest of creation.

As we look at the results of sin in the Biblical account, let’s compare mentally, how their sin affected them and how our sin affects us today.

Verse 7) 7) Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves…

As a result of their sin, Adam and Eve felt shame about their physical bodies…before the fall, Genesis 2:25 declared, “The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame…”

But now, after their dis-obedience, (sin) they were no longer virtuous…They had a new awareness of themselves and of each other;;; they now knew that their bodies could be viewed and used with evil lusting…They sensed a need for concealment: They sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves… sin has caused the emotion of shame…The same thing happens to us when we sin, we experience the emotion of shame!! (Stronghold #1)>>> use for future lessons>>>

They tried to change these conditions by their own effort…but these fig leaves from the fig tree were neither long lasting nor effective…There is only one effective way to deal with our sin!!!!!!

I don’t believe any of us have ever tried to sew fig leaves together to cover our sins, but I know we have all tried to handle our sinful actions on our own…Trying to handle them on our own is just like trying to cover them with fig leaves, it will not work…There is only one thing that will cover our sins and it is the, unblemished blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ our Lord…“What can wash away our sin, nothing but the blood of Jesus.”

Verses 8-10… 8) Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as He was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9) But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you”? 10) He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked so I hid.”

But not only was there shame; there was also guilt…<<<(Stronghold #2>>>)…. Their relationship with God was broken…They fled from God’s presence out of fear…>>>Stronghold #3>>> (They hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden...) Isn’t this amazing—hiding from the God who had the power to make them???
But God came looking for them…And He has sent somebody looking for you also, and His name is Jesus…

The question, “Where are you?” Was a rhetorical question asked for their benefit…God, in His mercy, was giving them a chance to acknowledge their wrong…

THE BLAME GAME 3: 11-13.

11) And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” 12) The man said, “The woman you put here with me, she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” 13) Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

There are many first in the book of Genesis and this one that we will always remember…It the first time the husband ever blamed something on his wife…We all have a tendency to blame some one else for our own mistakes, it just human nature…Some of us are just better at it than others…

Both Adam and Eve blamed others for their sin…Rather than confessing personal responsibility, they tried to put the blame on someone else…as sinners we find it so hard to say, “I did it and it was wrong….” We blame our environment, genetics, upbringing or lack thereof, and so on…Our original parents were no different…First Adam blamed the woman and indirectly, God Himself…Second, the woman blamed the serpent, and as we all know the serpent didn’t have a leg to stand on…

When God asked Adam about his sin…Adam blamed his wife…Then she blamed the serpent…How easy it is to excuse our sins by blaming someone else or circumstances…But
God knows the truth, and He holds each of us responsible for what we do…Admit your wrong attitudes and actions and apologize to God…don’t try to get away with sin by blaming someone else…

Adam and Eve failed to heed God’s warning recorded in 2:16-17…They didn’t understand the reasons for His command, so they chose to act in another way that looked better to them…All of God’s commands are for our own good, but we may not always understand the reasons behind them…People who trust God will obey because God ask them to, whether or not they understand why God commands it…

Malfunction in paradise, that’s the title to this message…Why did this happen…SIN…Why do we have unnecessary hardships in our life??? SIN is the answer…

Adam and Eve chose their course of action (Disobedience), and then God chose His…As a holy God, He could respond only in a way consistent with His perfect moral nature…He could not allow sin to go unchecked…He had to punish it…If the consequences of Adam and Eve’s sin seem extreme, remember that their sin set in motion the world’s tendency toward disobeying God…That is why we sin today…Every human being ever born, with the exception of Jesus has inherited the sinful nature of Adam and Eve…The punishment of these two people reflects how seriously God views sin…

The rest of the book of Genesis recounts painful stories of lives ruined as a result of the fall…Disobedience is sin…and it breaks our fellowship with God…but fortunately, when we disobey…God is willing to forgive us and to restore our relationship to Him…He has chose to do this through the Chief Technician, Jesus…Give Him a call on the hot line… The number is--- P R A Y E R.
